Bartolomé Island

A wonderful early morning outing took us to the summit of the eroded rim of Bartolomé volcano. The spectacular view from up there made the climb really worth it. We climbed up more than three hundred steps and then down again!

After breakfast, our Expedition Leader, Lucho Verdesoto, briefed us on the art of snorkeling. Once our naturalists distributed all the snorkeling gear among us, we went out again to snorkel and walk on the dunes full of nests of sea turtles. White tipped sharks, Galápagos penguins, and colorfull tropical fish were the highlight of the morning.

We snorkeled again in the afternoon, and after a delightful easy stroll along the shores of Santiago Island, we enjoyed a spectacular sunset in paradise.

The afternoon highlights were all the land birds, such as finches, mockingbirds, warblers, Galápagos doves and even the hawk. On the rocky shores we observed Sally Lightfoot crabs, shore birds and big marine iguanas.

It was a fabulous first full day on the islands.
