Bartolomé & Santiago Islands
We started our first full day in the archipielago with an early morning outing to climb up to the summit of Bartolomé Island. We left the ship before breakfast, at six thirty in the morning, as the islands gets too hot later in the morning to climb up to the top of a volcano.
The effort was really worth it as we had the best viewpoint at the end of the climb. Once back on board and after a well deserved breakfast, our Expedition Leader Lucho Verdesoto briefed us on the art of snorkeling and, after our naturalists geared us up, we had the second morning outing, this time to go snorkeling around Pinnacle rock.
Our naturalists patiently taught us how to snorkel from the shallow waters at the beach so we could get confident for the next days’ deep water snorkellings. We snorkeled with penguins, sharks, sting rays and we enjoyed it so much that, in the afternoon, we went again snorkeling at Puerto Egas on Santiago Island.
More than two thirds of all our guests went snorkeling again in the afternoon and this time we had close encounters with sea turtles. The walk along the shores on the coast later in the afternoon was full of highlights: large marine iguanas, shore birds, blue footed boobies, pelicans, sea lions and more.
Later in the afternoon we had a little Garua which is the name of the season that is just coming from June on. This was a fabulous first full day in paradise.
