Floreana Island

While anchored at Post Office Bay, today in the morning we enjoyed a battalion of storm petrels wandering behind the NG Islander. Something seem to be very appealing to them, and certainly even though we want to think it is the ship, we all know it is the large amount of food in the shape of plankton that is present in our ocean. It ends up being very emotional watching them “skating” at the surface of the water. Sometimes they seem to be levitating (which they for sure do since they fly) in a magical act.

Once our activities at the mail barrel ended, we moved towards Champion Islet where, after exploring the shoreline in search of the Charles mockingbird, we spent a good hour plus, playing with sea lions in a sensational snorkeling experience. Everybody came out of the water just when some chills prevented us from being there longer– in spite of the 74°F of the ocean. Also, playing with sea lions wears out anyone who takes the match seriously.

The afternoon brought us the opportunity to experience kayaking in very quiet and clear waters at Punta Cormorant. The activity was by far extraordinary. We got close to some blue footed boobies and again sea lions were escorting us. It was a prime time that gave us a very personal contact with nature.

The hike at this site delighted everybody with 30 flamingos wading on the existing lagoon. We were even more delighted when we realized they were starting their courtship dance.

A new cycle is beginning in the Galápagos and we are in a very good position to be able to witness it. More to learn, more to think about…
