Floreana Island (Cormorant Point, Champion Islet, Post Office Bay)
Today we had an early wake up call to explore the landscape on Cormorant Point. This is one of the many visitor sites on the island of Floreana. Also known as Charles, Floreana is the site of the most interesting happenings of human history in Galápagos; being the first island to be colonized, it has been visited by many famous sailors and pirates.
We decided to explore the underwater world of Galápagos. On a snorkeling outing we had the chance to swim with sea lions and wide variety of fish around the rocky reefs of Champion Islet. We also went for a Zodiac ride to look for the Floreana mockingbird; with luck we encountered a few individuals of this species in critic danger of extinction.
During the afternoon we had a Zodiac ride along Post Office Bay looking for interesting colonies of sea lions, and we also found a couple of Galápagos penguins sitting on the black lava fields. Many Pacific green sea turtles were also seen swimming in the clear water around this site!
We finally landed on the greenish sand of Post Office Bay to visit the famous post office barrel, set here in the 17th century. A very easy and practical use of communication used back in the day and still nowadays by our visitors to the enchanted archipelago.
