Santa Cruz & Sombrero Chino Islands
What a wonderful day we all had today…
The seas were calm on the northern part of the second largest island in the Galápagos, Santa Cruz Island, our destination. Here we had a dry landing after breakfast to the “land of dragons”! Land iguanas in their natural state were the highlights of this walk, but there is always a surprise awaiting us on the “Enchanted Islands”. As soon as we set foot on this surreal place we were immediately transported back in time: a small tuff cone, black lava rock, leafless trees, prickly pear cacti with impressive trunks, a lagoon and suddenly, a single pink flamingo. That was the welcoming scene of this marvelous place. Off we went in search of wildlife and inevitably we were greeted with elusive iguanas.
Soon after our walk we started our water activities which are always exciting; some of us went snorkeling and others just a quick dip into the ocean from the ship.
Our ship repositioned during lunch and soon after we had a wonderful talk about animal behavior by Carleton Collage guest lecturer Matt Rand, what a treat.
Our afternoon finds us at Sombrero Chino, and here we started with diverse water activities. Kayak outings, snorkeling, beach stretching and panga rides, all of these activities were available for us to choose from and customize our expedition. It does not matter where you are, for sure you will have the best of times.
This is the magic of the Galápagos Islands, a place which has been forgotten by time and yet ironically has the answer for coexistence. So it makes me wonder and so here is my quotation for you my dear reader:
We must not acknowledge the common saying “do not humanize the animal” but instead through coexistence and respect from one another embrace “animalizing the human” so we could become one with nature, as we once were.
