Cerro Dragon & Sombrero Chino Island
We woke up on a different side of the island to a contrasting scene. Daybreak was overcast yet beautiful, the sun rising from behind Santa Cruz Island. All signs indicated that it was going to be a great morning.
Cerro Dragon is located in the northwestern side of the second largest island, with vegetation like cactus, holy stick, salt bush, leather leaf, and other varieties of plants that have been well adapted to this very difficult environment.
Our guests got to see several land iguanas; one of the species was endemic to the island, with males that look as if an artist had painted their bodies with a magical yellow color. Our guests photographed great images of these peaceful creatures. Afterwards, some people went for snorkeling where they were fascinated by the amount of wild life in that spot, Guy Fawkes islet.
Later we repositioned the ship to our next destination, Sombrero Chino Island, where we had several exploration options. A beautiful bay with turquoise shallow water made the perfect place for water activities, such as kayaking, snorkeling, Zodiac cruising, and "beaching". The scenery in this location is so impressive with candelabra cactus forest close to the shoreline of Santiago Island, and huge pahoehoe lava fields. Our guests were fascinated with those beautiful king angel fish, and so many other species that were found there, as well as a couple of white-tipped reef sharks, and of course the Galápagos penguins that swam among the snorkelers for a while.
We ended the day with a delicious barbecue on the teak deck watching the sky and feeling a soft breeze on our faces.
