Floreana Island

Our destination site today was Floreana Island, chosen many centuries ago as a camping base by whalers and pirates; they anchored here because it is a well sheltered place. Now known as Post Office Bay, it is an historical site that encloses a lot of mysteries and stories.

In order to follow the tradition kept many years by visitors, we visited Post
Office Bay with the purpose of exchanging post cards and letters; the main idea of doing this was to hand deliver them if they happen to have an address near our own homes. Most of our guests were very happy to collect letters to deliver, leaving some new ones themselves with the hope of getting them back some day, hand delivered by a future visitor to the island.
Later in the morning we went out to do some aquatic activities around an islet called Champion, located off the coast of Floreana. Most of us rode aboard our glass bottom boat in order to enjoy the marine ecosystem of this site without getting wet; others decided to go deep water snorkelling along the coast of Champion. There is a great diversity of sea life in this area and we found sea lions and a lot of tropical fish.

After our delicious lunch we moved the ship and dropped anchor at Punta Cormorant, located on the northern part of Floreana. Our guests were offered many options at this site. Some guests went to explore a nice calm bay aboard our kayaks looking for sea birds and marine life, the rest of us landed on a nice inorganic beach where the sand has a greenish hue.

Later all of us did a nice walk where we came across some flamingos together with white cheeked pintail ducks and many shore birds in a big brackish water lagoon. During the walk also we arrived to a nice white sand beach that is a nesting territory of sea turtles, we saw many nests and sea turtle tracks. From the beach we also found sea turtles and some rays swimming close to the shore.
