Española Island

The sky is clear; the wind blows softly. This wonderful island assures us a perfect day, our first full day in this magical place. Our first outing took place on the easternmost corner of the island, called Punta Suarez. Since the very beginning when we landed at the jetty, we realized the richness and beauty of this fantastic site. Not far from our position we saw lovely sea lion pups playing at the shoreline in a tide pool. Just a few yards away there were male marine iguanas showing their beautiful red, green and black color to attract females (however the females seemed to not be interested in them). A few steps away we sighted several couples of blue footed boobies doing their courtship dance and showing each other the wonderful color of their feet. Continuing our walk along the cliff section of the trail, we spotted the largest species of booby in the islands, the beautiful white and black Nazca booby, lava lizards on the rocks escaping from our steps, swallow-tailed gulls, and the marvelous red-billed tropic birds soaring gracefully along the cliff. When the surf hits a shoreline fissure just right, a “blow hole” forms, the water rises as a geyser, making a sound like a thunder and we can feel the breeze hitting our faces tenderly.

At noon we enjoyed the delicious Ecuadorian buffet lunch, with different dishes from various regions of my stunning nation. Later and after a nap, we started the water activities that were programmed for the afternoon: outings in the glass bottom boat, deep water snorkeling, beach goers, and kayaking.

By the expression on the faces of our guests, we could tell how much they enjoyed the beach; just being able to sit next to sea lions along the white sand below that magnificent blue sky. It was a fascinating day here in the Galápagos Islands.
