Today we started without breakfast. The early morning found most of us in the clear yet mysterious waters of Post Office Bay. The reason: a 200 year-old mailing tradition, that whalers, traders, scientists and mad visitors used to communicate with their loved ones. In this free system, the sender deposits a letter (no money please) in a decades-old barrel (it has a little door) then waits for a willing traveller to pass by and check the barrel, read the address and deliver it by hand if it is on his or her way back home. Letters could take years to arrive when this system was first implemented, but today, with so many willing travellers, delivery averages three working days. So we sent and collected mail at 7:00 a.m. After, we had breakfast on board. Later we searched for sharks and other marine creatures around Champion Island.
Our afternoon was full of surprises, such as the number of flamingos in the lagoon of Punta Cormorant, or the fresh Pacific green turtle track in the incredibly white sand of Flour Beach.
