Santa Cruz & Sombrero Chino Islands

With a few clouds in the sky, the sun rose. However, the conditions promised us a great day. In the morning we visited the north western side of Santa Cruz Island, a place known as Cerro Dragon, which means "dragon hill". It is called that because of the presence of one of the endemic reptiles found nowhere else, the Galápagos land iguanas. These magnificent critters have a beautiful yellow and brown color, and at this time of year they are getting more excited because it has just started to rain in the area, and the green vegetation on the ground will soon become abundant. We sighted at least eleven of those animals all along the trail! The sun was rising as time passed by, and the day was getting hotter. It was hard to believe that one island can look so different after just crossing to the opposite side.

In the afternoon we did diverse water activities such as deep water snorkeling, kayaking, and Zodiac cruises. For the snorkelers the place was marvelous; the clear turquoise water between the two islands and shallow depth made it the perfect site to see rays, white-tipped reef sharks, a penguin or two, marine iguanas diving, sea lions, and a countless number of fishes, all living in this fascinating underwater realm.

As this lovely day faded in time and will never return, we hope to have more such incredible experiences again in the near future.
