Española (Hood) Island

Today we visited the southernmost and oldest island of the Galápagos Archipelago: Española. This particular island constitutes a real highlight of the chain, due to its abundance of wildlife.

Our day began with a beautiful walk at a place called Punta Suarez, located on the western corner of the island, among big colonies of red and turquoise marine iguanas, playful sea lions, curious mocking birds and Nazca boobies.

As we got closer to the blow hole we found the impressive view of the cliff where we saw the strength of the water rushing up through a crack in the lava producing a blow hole that sounds like thunder. After our visit we came back to the ship for a typical Ecuadorian buffet lunch that included many delicacies from different regions of the country.

During the afternoon, we repositioned to an area named Gardner Bay, where we enjoyed the beach and the water activities. Whilst some of us snorkeled and swam, others took the glass bottom boat option to explore the underwater world. The best way to finish this wonderful day was kayaking along Gardner Bay enjoying a Galápagos sunset.
