Floreana Island

After all these years observing the wonderful creatures of the Galápagos Islands it is still for me a mystery to realize that every time I look around, these creatures are still there living in perfect harmony and protected. The peace and harmony found in the Galápagos is not easy to find in the world nowadays. In this magical archipelago we can still enjoy Nature in its splendor.

We started our expedition today visiting Post Office Bay. We had quiet, very calm seas. I felt happy, for I had the chance to land again on the islands. We checked the barrel that is placed at a close range from the landing spot looking for postcards and messages that we could deliver hand to hand, without using stamps! We continued today with this amusing tradition.

On the way back to the ship, we spotted some Pacific green sea turtles. The National Geographic Polaris headed toward Champion Islet. A gracious delegation of Galápagos sea lions welcomed us and accompanied us during the snorkeling outing.

We observed something very unusual today: a juvenile Galápagos sea lion trapped a Morey Eel and ate it in front of our eyes. Later in the morning during a Zodiac ride around the islet we almost jumped for happiness for we saw four of the rare Charles Mockingbirds. The birds were seen together in the dense dry vegetation zone surrounded by very large Prickly pear cacti (Opuntias).

We had a very warm day today; humidity was very high as well. This has been the hottest day lately, water temperature was around 80 degrees F.

Before disembarking for a walk in the afternoon we spotted some bottle-nosed dolphins in the distance. During the walk we saw some Greater flamingos as well.

I felt content that all of these creatures are still here in this hidden corner of “the Enchanted Islands. I ask myself, ‘What will happen in the future if all these creatures are not here anymore? I am sure I will depart with them.’
