Santa Cruz Island
We arrived this morning to the central island of the Galápagos Islands: Santa Cruz, my home. My eyes were swimming with tears of emotion.
After a fine breakfast, we readied ourselves to see the highlight of the whole trip: the giant tortoise! We disembarked at the National Park Service dock, and we made our way to the facility developed by the Darwin Station and the government of Ecuador.
Our visit to the tortoise reproduction and repatriation programs was exciting. We learned about their ways before and after hatching, their food and their droppings, and more!
Then we headed to town for some shopping mixed with just plain sightseeing and ice-cream eating. We soon moved to the highlands by bus, by bicycle, by walking and by running. We had an almost-pleasant temperature for these activities, if it weren’t for the scorching sun!
As we arrived to Altair, the beautiful restaurant in El Camote, we enjoyed the swimming pool and hammocks before lunch. After a chicken lunch, we headed to the borders of the National Park area, where looking for tortoises in the wild occupied the rest of our day!
