Bartolome & Santiago Islands

Today was our last day on the islands; we decided not to think about departure but enjoy every moment of it, and we did!

Starting from early in the morning we disembarked at 6:30 in order to climb to the summit of Bartolome Island. Even though it was so early we could still feel the equatorial sunlight, but the scenery was so impressive that we all agreed every effort was worth it to arrive to the top. Surrounded by parasitic spatter cones the very famous Pinnacle Rock was in front of us.

After a very well-deserved breakfast we disembarked on the golden beach of Bartolome. Some of us snorkeled, some took the glass bottom boat, some just relaxed on the beach and enjoyed!

In the afternoon we repositioned the National Geographic Polaris to the western side of Santiago Island, stopping at a place called Puerto Egas. Disembarkation now was on a black beach with interesting tuff formations in the surroundings. We walked all along the shore in a kind of summary of our trip; we saw marine iguanas, all different types of shore birds including a striated heron chick, and of course our very favorite sea lions and the Galápagos fur seal.

What a way of closing our trip! We have enjoyed these islands and I’m sure this week will be in our minds for a long long time!
