Inian Islands, George Island
Nested below a surrounding blanket of fog, breaching humpbacks graced the water just as the sun began to set. Flocking towards the windows, eyes of all ages watched a breaching whale only a few meters off the bow. Awaken with a similar backdrop, only distant mountain peaks were visible behind the thick layer of fog. Looking as though a painted picture, the low lining fog bank outlined the distant shores of Inian Island, home to the majestic Steller sea lions and occasional sea otters. Floating with her young, a mother sea otter and her pup glided steadily along the water. As though unbothered by their new found celebrity as eager visitors looked on, a few more unsuspected eyes darted and bolted across the water.
Creaking branches, moss covered trees and a narrow pathway set the scene found on George Island. A serene beauty embellished by a touch of history and home to a WWII canon aimed towards incoming enemies. A home to many creatures, the often welcoming silence was broken with a few whistling cries from soaring bald eagles as they danced gracefully through the sky. With pathways covered in brush an occasional banana slug could be seen crossing the trail. Typically colored in a vivid yellow pigment, these small creatures looked as though they had been doused with black speaks, creating a beautiful leopard-like similarity. Embracing the history and the immense beauty of George Island, our day was coming to a close. Just as the thick blanket of fog reclaimed its position along the horizon.
