The Power of Water at Endicott Arm
Today our expedition explored and experienced water. The aqua green water in Endicott Arm surrounded us when we first stepped out on deck. The ethereal blues of the face of Dawes Glacier calving sang to us on our Zodiac tours. The serenity of Ford’s Terror at slack tide invited us into her misty fjords, dancing with falling water, and walls of granite bearing the polish of water over time.
Here in Southeast Alaska, everywhere you look, the power of water is evident. The power of water in its solid form, ice, which carves out the great fjords and steep walls of granite that we traveled within today are a force difficult to imagine. Water in its liquid form creates cascading falls that slowly erode pathways out to sea. Water greets us as a light mist in its liquid form, a constant companion here in southeast Alaska gently reminding us of the roll it plays in designing, as well as sustaining, this magnificent place. Water in its vapor phase forms misty shrouds that encircle and envelope this rainforest.
To come to know and love Southeast Alaska, is to come to know and love water. To see and embrace water in all its moods and phases is a gift. It is the very essence of this place. Water is life.
