Los Islotes & Espiritu Santo, Gulf of California

The seas were calm this morning. As the sun gave us the first hints of a new day, the water turned into gold and the Sierra de la Giganta into fire. The breath-taking colors evolved slowly until the sun showed its first rays as a spectacular green flash.

Today was the perfect day to spend around the California sea lion colony, “Los Islotes”. After circumnavigating the islets and getting great looks of the playful sea lions and the numerous bird species, we could explore underwater to take a closer look. Snorkeling today was very special. The water visibility was ideal and experienced the world of life that lies beneath the surface. Playful sea lions approached us, with their big eyes that expressed an innocent puppy–like personality as they seemed to invite us to join them on their acrobatic underwater games.

Ensenada Grande was the location where we spent this afternoon. This great bay, probably one of the most fantastic in the gulf, offered the perfect place to kayak and explore the marvels of the Sonoran desert environment by foot. The vegetation through the arroyo was lush and vibrant. On a small nearby beach, dinner was served barbecue style. This was the grand farewell to this amazing day that we spent exploring the majestic Gulf of California.
