Cabo San Lucas & Gorda Banks

Last night we entered the tropics, on our journey south from Bahía Magdalena. As the sun came out, we approached Finisterra, or “Land’s End”, where the Gulf of California officially begins. Here we had the opportunity to explore the town of Cabo San Lucas, and San José Del Cabo. Birdwatchers visited an estuary, and encountered interesting bird species, like black necked stilts, different herons, and even the endemic Belding’s yellowthroat.

For us that stayed to explore the world beneath the tides, an amazing variety of fish gave us an experience we could never to forget. As the Pacific Ocean joins the Gulf of California, species from both sides coexist here, making this place a real jewel for underwater nature lovers. Special encounters like the colorful Clarion angelfish, thousands of yellow tail surgeon fish, and Cortés angels, were the highlights of the day. The abundance and diversity that surrounded us were absolutely breath-taking.

Sailing into the Gulf of California, we spotted some distant blows. These blows will eventually reveal the presence of two adult humpback whales and a very young playful calf. The calf breached a few times. Another group of comptetitive humpbacks appeared. Their powerful blows could be heard from a distance as they displayed their power to each other. In conclusion, one of the adults gave a full breach into the sky, and we sailed northbound into the night.
