Gorda Banks & Cabo San Lucas

We woke up to a bright pink sunrise as we sailed southbound to Cabo San Lucas. On our way we passed through a place which is known to be a good spot for finding humpback whales at this time of the year. The area surrounding Gorda Banks attracts a good number of humpbacks every winter. Today we spotted several of them, including a mother with a very young calf. We witnessed several full breaches in the distance of different individuals, as bottlenose dolphins joined us to ride our bow. Here we also had a glimpse of a scalloped hammerhead shark and a sailfish. These waters are highly productive and today we could see it with our own eyes.

We arrived at Cabo San Lucas, where some of us went snorkeling at “Playa Chileno”, and the bird lovers took a separate trip to San José del Cabo. The cape region offers the opportunity to see some animal species that cannot be seen anywhere else, and our bird watchers could see two of them; the gray thrasher and the Belding’s yellowthroat. The snorkelers found species we had not seen in the gulf, like the convict tang and the Moorish idol.

We left Friar’s Rocks behind as we sailed northbound into the sunset. Tomorrow the Gulf of California will be in our hearts and we will be exploring new boundaries of the Baja California Peninsula.
