Isla San Jose & Puerto Gato, Baja California Sur
It’s funny how time seems to slip away from us in Baja. As our journey among the great whales continues we forget what day of the week it is, let alone remember any sort of holiday. This morning, as part of our daily routine, Jim’s voice woke us at 7am and we started with our daily stretch class. Only on this day it was interrupted by a school of long beaked common dolphins playing in the wake created by the bow of the ship. These playful dolphins stand as a reminder to us to take each moment for fun, to catch the surf, and take a break from the routine.
After breakfast we approached Punta Colorado, Isla San Jose, for a look at desert plants, lizards, and whale fossils buried in the volcanic ash that had been deposited along this land millions of years ago. Snorkelers enjoyed a vast, pristine area to themselves. The rest of us scrambled up and over the granite boulders along the wind-shaped volcanic ash walls of the arroyo. Along the way we stopped to catch a glimpse of a whiptail lizard in a brief moment of pause and admire its removable turquoise-colored tail. After a long hike in the beautiful Baja desert the cool waters seemed much more inviting. A few of us ventured in to splash around and cool off before lunch and our departure to our next destination.
Our afternoon cruise in search of more whales gave us time to reflect on our week as well as our loved ones on this Valentine’s day. Even in the seemingly middle of nowhere, Hershey kisses found their way to our pallets. On approach to the beach of Puerto Gato, giant pillows of fossil sand dunes welcomed us. The afternoon was full of activity: kayaking, snorkeling, swimming, and hiking on this beautiful sandy beach. Far from any sort of routine.
To end our perfect Baja day, we were treated to a Valentine’s Day Beach BBQ. Chef Jeff Cahill and assistant Clayton Barton unleashed an amazing buffet along side our bonfire. Chocolate covered strawberries were yet another reminder of this romantic holiday and what better place to spend it than on a gorgeous beach in the Gulf of California. As the sun set behind the rocky canyon just off of the beach, the memories and images of this Valentines Day lingered … too lovely for a card company to capture.
