San Ignacio Lagoon, Baja California
During the night we navigated to San Ignacio Lagoon, the seas had us inclined to recline into a supine position. This morning the bumps of the night paid off with numerous cow calf pairs of gray whales frolicking all around the lagoon. So…
In our fleet of sturdy Zodiacs, to the lagoon we all did go,
Wondering where to find the gray whales, our Pangueros were in the know
Tuffs of puffs of gray whale breath, hung momentarily in the air
All hands pointed to the mists, let’s go hang out over there!
Amazingly they could disappear, leaving us searching to and fro
From behind they would slowly sneak, and startle us with a blow
The finest mist of whale snot, drifted across our bow and our noses
The fragrance was not delicate, it had a slight whale halitosis
Whales were not the only show, as we juggled our attentions
A mischievous sea lion popped above the water, with undefined intentions
Surf scoters panicked into flight, the pelicans plunged for a meal
Terns creaked above our heads, while the whales hid beneath our keel
Bejeweled with crustaceans, embedded barnacles and clinging lice
One waves its cilia in the water, the free ride comes at the right price
A whale head, like a periscope, emerged from the depths below
Admiring oohs and ahhs came from the Zodiacs, as the whale rotated in slow-mo
Flinging itself from the water, and momentarily taking pectoral flight
A calf tried flying earnestly, as it breached with all of its might
Sunburned and salt crusted, we returned to our Mother ship
Satiated by our days adventures, and looking forward to more photo tips
Doggerel phrases we have shared with you, a flimsy literary tool
You may try to ponder sense of this, but don’t, it’s April Fools!
