Isla Danzante & Reflections of Baja California

We began our trip
On a beautiful ship
With paint of gold and blue
Shipmates were met
And cameras were set
To click on Ralph’s first cue

The first night was rough
But we were tough
And we weathered the pacific chop
There were some among
Who would have sung
“Please, just make it stop!”

San Ignacio
Was the place to go
To look for our new gray friends
With barnacles and lice
And everything nice
The fun seemed never to end

On our southbound trip
We were on the ship
For 31 hours straight
We saw plenty of whales
And could tell some tales
But now Cabo was our fate

With a stretch and a yawn
We were up by dawn
To capture the light in the sky
The morning commute
Came out of the chute
And busily motored on by

The kayaks were sent
And away they went
Riding the crests of the sea
Lucy’s red head
On a photographic spread
We wondered if it will be?

Humpbacks at the ‘banks
Can be pretty swank
If they want to tail lob or breach
A cooperative guy
A calf leapt towards the sky
If only its pectorals could reach

The next island was frosted
Or maybe accosted
By ages of avian droppings
Into the water we leapt
It was there that we met
Entertaining sea lions belly flopping

Carlos whispered soft words
Which none of us heard
Into the rattlesnakes ear
Many photos were took
As the snakes rattles shook
But silence was all we could hear

Smooth waters with spouts
Were found all about
As we cruised the mirror like seas
We became one with the pod
Which might seem quite odd
But we were really quite pleased

On a cardon perched high
An iguana did spy
Open flowers ready for munching
Up the ribs it did climb
Being careful of spines
With its view, it sat placidly lunching

Watch the angle of the spout
We heard Michael shout
As the sperm whales dove in front
Crenulated skin
reminiscent of raisins
And the dorsal so flattened and blunt

If you’re not on the bow
You should be right now
Came the announcement from Ralph Lee
The fin whales are here
And they’re very near
And quite a spectacle to see

Today we did prance
On an island named for dance,
the lovely Isla Danzante
With memory cards filled
And stuffed to our gills
We’re leaving tomorrow, now aren’t we?

Captain Composition
Puts us into position
For photographic fantasies galore
To him we give a hand
For backdrops of land
And photos of whales we adore

We’ll hope for the best
as you go home to rest
And recoup from 2 weeks of discovery
Whales are an addiction
We have a prediction
From this there will be no recovery

So our silly rhyme, has taken your time
Many of you could be thinking
Iambic pentameter or just strange parameter?
What have Sue and Linda been drinking?

The landscape has inspired
Our cameras to fire
To lose this would surely be tragic
So back up your files
Before you fly miles
And Baja will always stay magic
