Magdalena Bay, Hull Canal, La Entrada, Punta Tosca

We gather on the upper aft deck as the sun begins to rise, anxiously waiting to board the Zodiacs and begin our search for gray whales. On the horizon, mottled shades from pink to orange form a brilliant multi-colored backdrop. In the forefront, flying at full mast, the American Flag flaps and waves in all its glory on this historical Inauguration Day.

While navigating through Boca del Soledad, the Zodiac becomes the favorite amusement for a group of bottlenose dolphins. As though selectively invited to their own personal playground, we are entertained and delighted at their playful bow riding, engaged in a new way with these special creatures. The cow and calf pair of gray whales we spy nearly take our breath away as they gracefully ascend and descend the water’s surface. We watch the two for quite some time, then slowly cruise past the mangroves, sprinkled with beautiful frigate birds.

When we return to the National Geographic Sea Bird, the sun lit deck is just perfect for our morning stretch class. Following the class, the deck is then transformed into our café for a deck barbeque. Smiles are shared and a good time is had by all. Completely satiated, we spend the afternoon in various forms of relaxation. Some of us bask in the sun and enjoy the view, while others delve into a good book. Others enjoy the therapeutic benefits of a spa treatment. Woven into the fabric of our day are the captivating sightings of more gray whales at La Entrada, a lighthouse, and more grey whales at Punta Tosca.

To complete this absolutely enchanted day we are graced with breaching humpback whales and an absolutely magnificent sunset.
