Bahia Magdalena & Sand Dollar Beach
Our final morning of exploration began earlier than usual with Zodiac tours in search of gray whales. Many intrepid guests arose early to join the sunrise cruises of northern Bahia Magdalena. Others enjoyed a bit more shut-eye, rising later to take tours in the mid-morning sunshine of the bay. The wind was calm and blows were seen all around as we enjoyed the beginnings of a beautiful day amongst the unique and demonstrative grays.
Our fabulous pilot, Alejandro Camacho, came aboard once again to guide us safely through Hull Canal and into the wider, southern part of the bay. Mid-morning we began our transit and continued our visual enjoyment of whales, magnificent frigatebirds, cormorants, pelicans, egrets, and even the beautiful marbled godwits along the waterline. The shore was quite varied, ranging between shifting sand dunes and magnificent, tangled mangroves.
As the sun dipped lower in the late afternoon sky, we went ashore along a narrow section of Isla Magdalena. Many guests set off across the extensive dunes to explore a piece of the Pacific coast called “Sand Dollar Beach.” The walks snaked between patches of resilient sea purslane and sand verbena. Beautiful shell fragments were piled along the base of small dunes, deposited by the ever-constant Pacific winds.
Those searching for an alternative adventure climbed into the kayaks and paddled downwind along the beautiful, sandy shoreline. This adventure led to a brisk walk back to the main beach for more than half of our kayakers.
At the close of the day, we enjoyed fine company and conversation during Social Hour in the Lounge. Sue offered everyone a chance to share their most memorable aspects of the cruise during our last evening Recap. We adjourned to the Dining Room for our Farewell Dinner and toasted the close of a fabulous adventure Among the Great Whales.
