Magdalena Bay
The National Geographic Sea Bird explorers awoke to a beautiful sunrise this morning and the blows of a gray whale mother and her calf as well as many of the bird species that inhabit the bay.
After the hotel staff helped to satiate our physical hunger with an outstanding breakfast buffet we were welcomed by the gray whales of Magdalena Bay where our inquisitive minds were satisfied. It was as if these magnificent creatures knew that we came to spend time with them and they were more than generous when granting our desires.
This afternoon we took Zodiacs to Isla Magdalena where we were able to cross the desert’s sand dunes to meet the seashore of the Pacific Ocean showing off its colorful surf. As there were many that enjoy the birds of the Peninsula as much as the whales, it was a great time to hike though the mangroves and view what serves as home to many species.
Upon returning to the ship we were welcomed by music from a local group “The Coyotes” and a fiesta feast that proved to be the perfect meal after a full day of activities.
To top off a perfect day of traversing the waters with the gray whales we then turned our attention to the skies and the wonder of the planets, and maybe catching a glimpse of how the travelers of an earlier time might have navigated these waters.
We feel very fortunate to be among the handful of people on this planet to enjoy what we have today. And, as this day becomes a special and unforgettable page in our journals, we look forward to what tomorrow might hold for us.
