Sea of Cortez at Gorda Banks
The day was ushered in by the Expedition Leader’s pleasant voice easing us into morning’s arrival. Not long afterwards she announced that there were whales off the bow, and the soothing wake up immediately became a quick dress and to the bow so as not to miss a blow.
After a delicious breakfast buffet, served by the hotel staff, the search continued for more whales while cruising the Sea of Cortez and Gorda Banks. The humpback whales showed up and of course mesmerized us all with their antics. A mother and calf were very active as were their various escorts which seemed to come and go as the watching progressed. Searching for whales will build an appetite and the galley was, once again, most accommodating to provide a wonderful lunch as the ship entered the pretty marina of San Jose del Cabo.
Taking a short drive by bus to the town of San Jose del Cabo we visited an estuary to do some bird watching and the much enjoyed sport of shopping. The estuary is home to many birds such as ruddy ducks, common moorhens and the endemic Belding’s yellowthroat. It was a great walk and those who chose the stroll through town were able to enjoy the local culture.
While there was most certainly a beautiful sunset at Land’s End this evening, we saw it only from a distance, because we extended our visit with the magnificent humpbacks as they cavorted and breached in the waters just south of San Jose del Cabo.
