Bay of Loreto National Park and Isla Santa Catalina

The morning began with a brief stop in Puerto Escondido and then off to cruise for whales. Upon leaving the bay we were met by beautiful skies and calm seas and cruised by the beautiful Isla del Carmen. On the journey to our afternoon anchorage we had a delightful visit from a group of dolphins, a couple of fin whales, blue whales, and the highlight of the day, sperm whales with which we spent a bit of time. Then we pushed towards our destination at Isla Santa Catalina where we anchored at Elephant Rock. For those who were ambitious there was a great walk to the top of an arroyo with a spectacular view of the other side as a reward. Snorkeling and Zodiac cruises were also offered as part of the afternoon options. Isla Santa Catalina provides several different looks at cactus species such as the giant barrel and cardon. The rattleless rattlesnake calls this home and is found only on this island. One group of lucky hikers spotted this endemic species. As the sun set on this beautiful day in the Sea of Cortez our minds turned towards the idea of another wonderful dinner served by the hotel staff and what tomorrow has in store for us.
