Isla Partida & Espiritu Santo
Today we explored the southern end of the San Jose channel. Before breakfast we spotted some blows of unidentified whales. The wind was blowing strongly from the North, and so the blows quickly dissipated in the air. We estimated at least three whales, and our best guess of what species they were was Bryde's whales. These animals have an erratic behavior and even with good sea conditions, they can be challenging for whale watchers.
We sailed towards Isla Partida, where we found a beautiful protected bay called “El Cardonal.” Once under the protection of the majestic cliffs, we deployed our kayaks in the turquoise water to explore the shoreline. We also had the opportunity to hike to the opposite side of the island through an intertidal mangrove environment that gradually turned into a desert.
Our second landing of the day was Punta Dispensa, located at the southern part of Isla Espiritu Santo. Once again we had the options of exploring the island by foot on hikes of different lengths. Snorkeling here was a highlight for many, since the visibility of the water was excellent, and this place has healthy corals and a great abundance of marine creatures. Moray eels, giant damsels, spiny lobsters and Cortes angel fishes were seen, among many others.
To end the day, we had dinner ashore. Our hotel staff greeted us as we came back from our hikes, and from beach combing along the long sandy beach. Our Bosun started a bonfire where we roasted marshmallows under the stars.
It is hard to think of a better way to end another adventurous day, exploring the wonders of Mexico's Gulf of California.
