Isla San Jose & Puerto Gatos

During the night we had made good time going north from San Jose del Cabo, and as the sun greeted the new day, we were already in San Jose Channel, a good area to find marine mammals. With the island of San Jose on our starboard side, we reached the end of the channel, and promptly saw a blow from a whale. It happened to be a humpback whale. We followed it for a while, but it did not cooperate.

We turned at the northern point of the island, and sailed a small distance to the south along its eastern side, up to a point called Punta Colorada, where we eventually tied up. Here, under a series of magnificent red sandstone cliffs, we snorkeled for a good while, enjoying the colorful fish and many invertebrates. After this aqueous exercise, we landed on the island and hiked a short distance into the incredibly colorful arroyo, where a great number of interesting plants awaited us, as well as a series of fossils, among which the most common were the seashells. These deposits are Pliocene!

Back on the ship, we sailed again towards the mainland, to a point called Puerto Gatos, where we had a delicious dinner in the company of the owners of the land, Mr. Manuel Higuera and his lovely wife Susana. We then heard some stories by William and Dave, which were very entertaining. David then showed us the stars that stared at us from the sky, giving them names.
