Los Islotes & Bahia Bonanza
Wow! What a spectacular day filled with so many of the wondrous things Baja California has to offer. Our day begins with a Zodiac cruse at Los Islotes. Before we have the chance to warm our seats, we are engrossed in a captivating performance from the Thurston’s devil rays breaking through the water’s surface. While watching them flap their wing- like fins, one begins to wonder if they are about to take flight.
Moments later, we are delighting in the playful antics of the California sea lions. Their bodies bend and twist in a graceful manor, as they glide through the water, while others moan and groan from their cozy resting spots on the rocks. Pelicans soar above us as an enthusiastic onlooker shouts “Oh look, there are the blue-footed boobies!” Their feet are as blue as a brilliantly clear sky. Many beautiful birds call this tiny island, made of huge volcanic rocks, their home.
Shortly after our cruise we get up close and personal with the underwater world here. After donning our snorkel gear, we take the plunge! The undersea world comes to life, a world that some of us experienced for the first time just today. Swimming with the sea lions is an experience that one could not have imagined. Adding color and mystery to the environment are the many stunning fish that surround us. The amber and indigo colored king angelfish are particularly striking.
The excitement continues this afternoon when, before going ashore for the afternoon, humpback whales are spotted from the bow of the National Geographic Sea Bird. Once on shore at the white sandy beach of Bahia Bonanza, we scurry off in our respective directions. Many choose to hike and explore the desert terraine, while others choose to kayak in this beautiful bay. Snorkel enthusiasts take the opportunity to explore the bay from below. Peace and tranquility are the gifts received by those of us who choose to take in this lovely landscape while lounging on the beach. A fantastic barbecue and bonfire is prepared for us as the sun goes down; the perfect ending to a perfect day.
