Los Islotes & Isla Espiritu Santo

“Can you pass the de-fogger?” squirt, squirt, smear, dunk.
Turn, slide, splash…
Yikes! Refreshing!
Floating, weightless, steady breathing
Immersed in undulating waves of motion
Schools of fishes - thousands of fishes!
then
Zoom, twirl, swish, zip, loop-de-loop, zing

This morning the National Geographic Sea Bird arrived at the small, rocky islets known as Los Islotes, with their seabird nesting colony and California sea lion haul-out. When viewing these creatures on land, they seem large and cumbersome. One may even feel sorry for how difficult it appears for them to move their massive bodies across the rocks. But then - splash! …just add water and magically they transform into graceful acrobats with playful puppy-like curiosity. How fun to enter this wildlife oasis and play with such gracious aquatic hosts.

We spent the afternoon anchored in the beautiful bay of Isla Espiritu Santo, with its white sandy beaches, bits of shell, and waters of aqua, turquoise, greens and blues. We hiked the cliffs, snorkeled and kayaked along the shoreline, practiced yoga on the beach, and lolled in beach chairs enjoying the warm sunshine and cooling breeze. The evening of this perfect day – the galley brought dinner to shore – we feasted as the sun slipped away, providing a magnificent shower of pink and orange. Another day in paradise.
