Astoria

Just before sundown yesterday afternoon, the National Geographic Sea Bird began her descent down the Willamette River. Awaiting our clearance to pass through the Hawthorn Bridge, newly embarked guests gathered on deck, with sparkling wine in hand and welcoming smiles revealing great excitement for our journey.

We shared the cast-off of the voyage ahead. Later on, we were captivated and transported to the 1800’s with an eloquent presentation by our staff historian. We retired for the evening with a lingering anticipation of the various opportunities we will experience during the next week, to be steeped in the history of the Corps of Discovery.

Waking to the distant view of the Pacific on this misty morning, onlookers were bundled in their waterproof apparel and gathered on deck, not only to view but to feel the rocking motion brought in by the turbulent water of the Pacific. During breakfast we traveled back up river and docked at the Columbia River Maritime Museum Pier, where we remained throughout the day. The Columbia River Maritime Museum, we all agree, is one of the best of its kind. The displays allow one to imagine the many challenges and perils faced when navigating the Columbia River bar.

The afternoon was filled with a variety of activities. Our excursion over to the Washington side of the river took us to the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center at Cape Disappointment; there we enjoyed a wonderful exhibit of the expedition.

Those who wished, enjoyed the view along the Pacific for a walk up to the Cape Disappointment lighthouse, used by mariners since 1856. A full view of the jetties built here at the bar brought into focus what was described earlier today by the docent at the maritime museum.

Another option was to walk along the stone path, created with artistic expression by Maya Lin, depicting the journey of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Several of us, still weary from our travel, went to seek out the comfort and rejuvenation of a wellness treatment on board, and the opportunity to wander into the town of Astoria at our leisure.

We are all satisfied that this has been a delightful first day.
