Cascade Mountains & Multnomah Falls

It is dawn on the National Geographic Sea Bird as we approach the Bonneville lock. The Columbia River is just ahead with the Cascade Mountains providing a scenic backdrop. Last night’s moon remains high in the sky adding a special touch to the ambiance of the surroundings. Engrossed in the display of exceptional seamanship, onlookers observe the seamless maneuvers taken to secure the vessel as we are transported through our first lock.

Following breakfast, we make our way by motor coach to Multnomah Falls. The sun casts a glow of autumn’s subtle emergence, illuminating the tops of the Cascade Mountains. Shades of amber and pale crimson come into sight scattered amidst the predominantly verdant mountainside. The volcanic rock formation, Beacon Rock, named by the Corps of Discovery, is in clear view. Its height is comparable to that of Multnomah Falls, reaching over 600 feet to the top. Once reaching the falls, those who choose, forge ahead for a challenging hike to the top. Many wish to admire this beautiful vista at their leisure, taking pleasure in the several scenic overlooks along the way. Others still, enjoy the view from the base of the falls, perhaps sipping on a soothing hot latte.

In the afternoon we continue to enjoy the sunshine with wonderful outdoor experiences. Those interested in visiting the charming little town of Hood River head off to explore for the afternoon, while others decide to walk or bike ride along the restored scenic highway. Fulfilled by our early afternoon activities, we reunite at the Columbia River Gorge Discovery Center. The insightful construction pays great homage to the unique and wondrous landscape of this region.

Upon leaving the Discovery Center we board our motor coach and head for our new home onboard the Spirit of Columbia. The careful planning given to assure our every comfort and ability to continue our exploration is evident as we are welcomed by both new and familiar faces. Once onboard we are introduced to the helpful hands of those who have made it possible for us to continue our voyage despite the closing of The Dalles dam. We are happy to begin the next half of our journey together. All can hear the sounds of laughter and contented exhales as we share our evening meal and get settled in.
