Los Islotes & La Paz
As soon as we arrived at Los Islotes this morning we could hear who we would be sharing the waters with. California sea lions have a bark and roar that is unmistakable. Once we started scanning the waters, we could see what looked like a boil of flippers, whiskers and mouths.
After breakfast we began our exploration of the volcanic rocks that make up Los Islotes. Covered in a thick layer of guano, these islets provide a perfect roost for blue-footed boobies, brown boobies, yellow footed gulls and magnificent frigatebirds. The sea lions slip onto the rocks with ease. With thick hides and amazing agility, these pinnipeds are able to fit into small crevices or on narrow ledges with ease and comfort.
During the afternoon we sailed for La Paz to explore a genuine Baja California Sur community. We walked to and through the Mercado Central, sampling treats from some of the local merchants. We continued down Calle Revolución to La Paz’s Plaza Central with its gorgeous cathedral. After pausing to photograph the church façade and the gazebo in the Plaza, we returned to the waterfront. Strolling the malecón, we stopped to watch a sand sculptor and sample a wide variety of ice cream flavors at La Fuente, the local “neveria.” Late in the afternoon, we arrived at the beautiful Hotel Los Arcos, where a wonderful local treat awaited us. Serenaded by a guitar trio playing traditional Mexican fold songs, we sipped margaritas and limonada, munched totopos and guacamole and even danced a little.
