Punta Dispensa, Isla Espiritu Santo
We woke this morning to a warm sunrise and a slight breeze! Taking advantage of the weather, we pulled our anchor and had a couple hours of cruising time as we made our way south. Time spent on the bow with binoculars up to our eyes and the wind behind us made an excellent morning for wildlife searching. We were fortunate enough to see some jumping Mobula rays and even an alligator needlefish darting through the waves under our bow.
The National Geographic Sea Lion dropped the anchor after breakfast at Punta Dispensa on the island of Espiritu Santo. Before lunch there were a variety of hikes offered. Some of us trekked to the highest peak as fast as we could to get a spectacular view of mangroves, Bonanza Beach, a small fishing camp, and the sparkling Sea of Cortez. Others did more desert creature searching and found a small rattlesnake and five scorpions!
In the afternoon we offered some snorkeling, and our guests took full advantage. Lots of fish were spotted and our young explorers even found an octopus and a moray eel! We spent the rest of our afternoon playing on the beach for one last time. Walking along the coastline looking for shells, kayaking, building sand castles, and basking in the sun with icy cold beverages made for a relaxing afternoon.
Back on the ship for our last evening, we gathered on the bow just at sunset for a group picture with our families and new friends from this week’s adventure. A special fun-filled recap involving our young travelers had us laughing all the way into the dining room.
