Bahia San Gabriel
After a bumpy night making our way around the southern end of the Baja California peninsula we awoke to a serene view of Bahia San Gabriel, on Espiritu Santo. This large shallow bay was a perfect respite from our previous nights experience. The sun was warm as we made our way to terra firma for walks along an elevated fossilized coral reef. The elusive black jack rabbit was seen scampering away from our encroaching groups. Kayakers enjoyed a wonderful paddle along a manmade lagoon lined with mangroves where many bird species spend their nights roosting. Herons, pelicans, vultures, egrets, and the numerous frigate birds all watched casually as the paddlers glided by.
Upon return to the shore the realization was made that the beach had become quite large. The tide had gone out quickly so alternate plans for the afternoon were made. The ship and all her watercraft were secured or transferred around the point to Bahia Dispensa for an afternoon walk and evening barbeque. The crew did a great job setting up chairs and tables and even a bar! As the sun set another pelican made a dusk appearance capping off a great day in the Sea of Cortez.
