Boca de Soledad

The billowy fog blanketing Magdalena Bay begins to lift with the luminosity of dawn. Excitement builds, as we prepare to board the Zodiacs in anticipation of getting a close view of gray whales. The quiet hush that envelopes us as we cruise this tranquil water is quickly transformed into shrill spurts of glee, as we are overawed by the magnificent spectacle of a gray whale and her calf. Reappearing from side to side, these majestic creatures grace us with their presence, as if solely to entertain us. As time stands still, we are privileged to be a part of their world.

Nature’s pallet is sprawled out before us as we ascend the dunes on Magdalena Island for one of this afternoon’s adventures. The contrasting emerald green of the sand verbena is highlighted against the sky’s beautiful blue backdrop. Sand, in mottled shades of fawn, is laced with traces of glistening quartz, which twinkles like a brilliant night sky. Cormorants flying above and a coyote taking refuge under a barren tree below suffuse us with an inward connection to the earth. How fitting for our distant view to be of the “Mouth of Solitude” (or Boca de Soledad), or the entrace to Magdelana Bay.

A number of bird enthusiasts choose to visit the desert behind the village of Puerto Lopez Mateos in search of the endemic gray thrasher. They are excited to find that species there, as well as lark sparrows, cactus wrens, Scott’s oriole and others.

In the evening we convene on board and gather in the lounge to share stories and enjoy the traditional Mexican music preformed by Los Coyotes de Magdalena, a three-piece local group. Much fun and laughter is added to our many beautiful memories.
