Hull Canal

Today would be the last day of our expedition to the Baja Peninsula. We have seen and enjoyed many facets of this wonderful place. Blue whales, humpback whales, fin whales, giant cacti, green flashes, amazing geology, Cabo craziness, dolphins, tropical fish, coyotes, endemic rabbits, ground squirrels, lizards, and others. There is one experience, however, that many of us hoped for and that we have heard about even before we came here, that is a close gray whale experience. Many of us had just that during our second day of whale watching from the Zodiacs. The day was bright, sunny, and windless. The conditions perfect for plying the waters of Hull Canal in search of gray whales. We found them and enjoyed good views. Then a cow/calf pair showed up that looked like they had a little more energy than others. The mother actually fell “asleep” during the morning, meaning just that she was resting at the surface and barely moving. The calf took advantage of this and came over to the Zodiacs for a visit. As the saying goes “When the mother is asleep the child will play.” The calf took turns approaching each of the boats and being awarded with friendly touches from the eager humans. It was quite an end to our whale watching adventures.

Later in the day we went out in the kayaks and Zodiacs for the last time on our trip to get a closer look at the mangrove environment. We as a group ended up with close to 140 bird species for the trip which may be a new record for a week long expedition to Baja California. Anyway you look at it, this has been a great expedition.
