Magdalena Bay
During the final day of any expedition the participants may take time to look back on the previous days events. It was hard to do that today as we were still enjoying the adventure. Our final day began, literally, at the crack of dawn with more time spent in the northern section of Magdalena Bay with the gray whales. The tide was not extreme so many cow/calf pairs were found breeching, lounging, nursing, and rubbing (On our Zodiacs). The calves are large enough that they exhibit curious behaviors such as seeing what all the noise is coming from the little black boats. By the end of the two rounds many of us were wet either from splashing waters onto the faces of the whales or from the whale breath.
Once we left the lagoons and headed south we had time for a talk about tequila followed by an adventure into the mangroves of Isla Magdalena. These mangrove swamps are home to many juvenile fish and the birds that prey upon them. Kayaks, for self discovery, or Zodiacs were available for a guided Zodiac expedition. The wind began to pick up but that didn’t stop the refreshment Zodiac from delivering drinks and cookies to those who wanted them.
It was a great end to a great week discovering the Baja California peninsula.
