Isla San Jose & Isla San Francisco

Our destination was north, and into the Gulf we will go
Over the lumps and a few sea bumps made by a north wind blow.

San Jose Island, Alas! Solid ground!
We wandered up the arroyo, many treasures to be found.

Through the mesquite around the palo verde, we’re going for a walk,
Listening to the Naturalist’s naturalizing talks.

Xantus’s hummer, an endemic jewel, in a tree we did find,
We took pictures and gathered memories and left only footprints behind.

A lizard scurries from the gravel in temporary fright
Into the shrubs and litter, safely out of sight.

Basking lizard like in the sand, so tranquil and relaxed,
We detect amongst our group, a reluctance to go back.

With snorkels, masks and wet suits, of which we squeezed ourselves in,
We swam in the chilly water with our colorful fishy friends.

We salute sergeant majors, striped fish with a military rank
While breathing through our snorkels, some sea water we (gulp!) drank.

In colorful kayaks we paddled, inside the arms of the bay
Setting a contemplative tone, nearing the end of our day.

Hermit crabs, fireworms, echinoderms abound,
Creatures of the tidepools that Larry and Carlos found.

With bonfire, tiki torches and friends gathered on the beach
A day ending in paradise was within everybody’s reach.
