Magdalena Bay & Open Pacific

Another marvelous day in the Bay of Magdalena. The sun shone at the appropriate time, and we were out early to see the gray whales once more. Cows and calves were seen, blowing out with this tremendous noise that made us turn our heads every so often, and marvel at the luck we had of seeing these behemoths so near.

Two different groups had this opportunity, during which some of us also saw dolphins and a California sea lion frolicking in the waves. The engines were warm, and we were ready to sail south, down again along the Hull Canal (Canal de Magdalena) and into the wider part of Magdalena Bay. A great number of birds were seen, especially ibis, small clouds of willets and godwits (in a few clouds summing up around 600 animals), which really made everybody turn their heads!

Shortly thereafter, we were out of the Bay of Magdalena and in the open Pacific Ocean. At La Entrada (The Entrance) we saw quite a few gray whales, where most likely mating behavior was occurring. On we sailed, south, till it was time for the sunset, when we observed a green flash; that last part of the sun as it disappears beneath the horizon.
