Magdalena Bay

To the live local music by the “Coyotes de Magdalena” we enjoy our appetizers of Jalapeno and melted cheese bean dip and fresh fruit plate after a memorable day at the ‘Boca’. Tonight is “Fiesta Night.” Our dinner will be comprised of Dorado, a fine local fish, carne asada, our meat dish, and poblano stuffed peppers, as one wishes. And, as if that is not enough, one can just go with a New York steak! Life on the high seas!

Earlier this morning we awoke to streaming flocks of cormorants, egrets and frigatebirds rising from their nighttime roosts in the mangroves next to our ship. After breakfast, some of us chose to go to the beach for a guided walk and dune jumping! Our rounds of whale watching began in earnest as well. We all had two hour-and-a-half opportunities to go out in the zodiacs today and be amongst the Gray whales in the protected lagoon. We saw breaching whales leaping out of the water, spyhoppers, whales that rise vertically out of the water, and whales that like swimming upside down on the surface!

The highlight was seeing the newborn calves with their moms. Mom can be up to 45 feet in length and her ‘baby’ about ten feet. The youngsters gain around 50 pounds a day on the rich milk!

Then, there are those moments when time truly stands still; the fresh, clean Pacific winds blow across the emerald lagoon, royal terns wheel and cry overhead and the babies, all 2,000 pounds in weight, turn and head for our Zodiacs with their moms close in tow. The cameras whir, we squeal and they pass a temptation away across our bow.

Truly a thrill and words cannot do the frozen moment justice…
