Punta Colorada

Early in the morning we disembarked at Punta Colorada. Before sunrise, we waited patiently on shore, at one of the most spectacular sandstone formations in the Gulf of California. Chasing sunrises in special places is the goal of these photo expeditions. Both photographers and nature lovers enjoyed the privilege of witnessing the beginning of the new day at Isla San José.

Later on, hiking through the beautiful arroyo allowed us to observe the desert nature in detail. Taking our time to analyze plants, lizards, insects and the interesting fossils, we made our way through the living desert.

As the morning progressed, the wind picked up. We had to make our way north, and the conditions gave us the chance to take some time to nap, or to edit the hundreds of images in our laptop computers. A few adventurers spent some time at the bridge looking between the waves for dolphins and a couple distant whale blows.

We made an evening landing, at the place on the Baja California Peninsula known as Peninsula San Marcial. We explored this place getting to know more about some of the plants and having quick looks at northern cardinals, flycatchers, gnatcatchers and a jackrabbit. The mare tails covered the sky as the light turned magical.

We returned to the National Geographic Sea Lion after a good day, to continue heading north into a remarkable journey.
