Isla San Francisco & Los Islotes

This morning the National Geographic Sea Lion saw first light in one of the most southern islands of the Sea of Cortez; San Francisco Island is a beautiful crescent shaped bay with white sand beaches that accentuate the crystal waters and the burnt red, rocky cliffs.

The island is small and easy to explore. After our breakfast, some guests went off for snorkeling, kayaking, and walks across the island’s salt pond, learning more about the desert. Another group of people just rested on the last day of the trip, strolling on the beach and swimming.

After lunch, the ship headed south to anchor just off the reddish rocks of Los Islotes. Here is the home for many breeding sea birds and California sea lions. We spent our afternoon here and our first activity was snorkeling with the sea lions. Many of the sea lions are very friendly, cute, and curious. Snorkelers were lucky enough to find a lot in the water, showing how fast they could turn and roll and how swiftly they could accelerate.

After that, we went in Zodiac cruises around the island, enjoying again the sea lions laying on the rocks and many species of the birds like pelicans, boobies and gulls.
