Athens to Cape Sounion
Today we began our voyage by boarding the Panorama in the harbor of Piraeus, just outside of Athens. Under perfect conditions we cruised out of the harbor and headed out to the southeast. Passing by many other vessels, we enjoyed views back towards the Acropolis, and had our first gulls, terns, and shearwaters of the trip. We settled into our cabins, explored the ship, and more importantly, relaxed on deck with the fine scenery around us.
Late in the afternoon, we approached Cape Sounion, the legendary southeasterly point of Attica. We anchored the vessel under the prominent Temple of Poseidon, and dropped the swim ladder off the stern of our ship. She is a perfect platform for enjoying these waters, and a few of us jumped in, “led” by our expedition leader. Though a bit chilly, Tom assured us it was the perfect way to wash away the rigors of travel. The wind dropped to nearly zero, and a fiery sunset closed our first day on this voyage amongst the Greek Cyclades.
