Naxos
Today Aeolos, god of the winds, was temperamental and decided to send us, instead of to Patmos and Kos where we were supposed to go, to the island of Naxos. The day was nice and the winds strong with a tendency to pick up.
We tried to go swimming in Paros but Aeolos had chosen Naxos for us today. After a nice morning swim we visited the island. A short drive around gave us the opportunity to see villages and enjoy the marble mountainous landscape of the island. We visited the area of an ancient marble quarry where sculptors abandoned their creations, a beautiful unfinished Kousos statue of the 6th century B.C. who since then lies asleep under an olive tree.
Returning to town with its charming port dominated by a great gate which the locals believe belonged to Adriadne’s palace, we visited a local distillery to try the local citron liqueur. Then we walked through the narrow alleys of the medieval town.
The day ended very pleasantly with a nice surprise; a Greek dinner buffet and Greek dancing performed by a local group of dancers who also showed us how to do Greek dancing.
Inspite of Aeolos tricks we had a great day and loads of fun.
