Sifnos

We sailed in the middle of the night from Cape Sounion heading towards the Cyclades. We woke up in the protected picturesque bay of Sifnos with little houses all around and a nice sandy beach not far from our boat. Expedition Leader Michelle soon announced that we would spend the whole morning swimming and kayaking!

It was a great start to our cruise: the dark blue Aegean waters, the strong light of the sun in contrast with the barren rock and the white houses. We enjoyed the morning in the water and after lunch we docked at the small port of Kamares. Soon after we were on our way to explore Sifnos.

The adults visited the old capital of the island, Kastro. We walked through the “labyrinth” of the town, trying to understand the architecture and how many things people had to do in order to protect themselves from pirates. Scattered around some ancient stones or sarcophagi reminded us that this same town was the site of the ancient city. It was hot, so a refreshment at the end of the tour was perfect.

The younger members of our group had followed a different way. They had gone to a pottery workshop where they had the opportunity to try to give shape to a piece of clay, either with their hands or at the pottery wheel. They did a great job! Everybody had the opportunity to admire their work, since after Kastro the adult group visited the pottery place as well.

Our tour ended back at Kamares, where some enjoyed dinner ashore. Everybody explored Kamares and checked out the various pottery shops. Sifnos is known for its ceramics, so a big variety is offered.

An ice-cream was, for several of us, the perfect ending to our first day in the Cyclades.
