Spetses & Dhokos Islands
This morning we approached the main harbor for the small island of Spetses. There was ample room at the public pier so we moored alongside for the morning. Shortly after breakfast our Greek guides Elleni and Ellie lead us on a walking tour through the heart of this port town. It was obvious that the waterfront was once the home of many ship-owners and Captains. The size and construction of the homes was a testament to their wealth. After wandering through the local fish market and through some of the back alleyways we arrived at and toured a local Greek Orthodox Church. Ellie described the significance of the construction of the church as being more like a fortress and explained the Icons and decorations inside the sanctuary.
After the church we made our way to the restored home and museum dedicated to Laskarina Bouboulina. Laskarina was a key figure in the Greek revolutionary effort against the Turkish occupiers in the early 1800’s. Spetses supplied a fleet for this effort and Bouboulina’s flagship the Agamemnon led this navy. She was later named as Admiral and the house was filled with items from Laskarina, her family and other items from this time period.
We departed Spetses at lunch time and began to make our way Eastward. The winds were favorable so we were able to set the sails en route to an anchorage at Dhokos Island. Shortly after the anchor was down and the engines were secured we opened the swim platform for business. The Mediterranean water felt great and many of the guests were happy to cool off for awhile. The staff opened the “jumping” platform for the kids but there were many ages that chose to participate above the 18 year old limit. Before the platform was secured there were competitions for biggest splash, smallest splash and most creative leap from the Panorama. Late in the afternoon we heaved anchor once again and made our way towards Poros Island and our anchorage for the evening.
