Poros Island, Greece
We departed Naxos Island late last night in order to arrive at Poros Island near the Peloponnese region by this morning. It was evident during our passage that conditions in the Cycladic Island area were deteriorating. As we got closer to Poros our ride improved and by sunrise we were able to hoist the sails for a few hours of sailing before our arrival into the port.
There was little to no room at the dock due to the fact that Poros is popular among Greeks and we are at the height of the Greek holiday season so we anchored in the harbor. Shortly after breakfast we started running Zodiac shuttles to the waterfront. Once ashore we were free to explore this small harbor town on our own. The local market was full of local fish that had been brought in that morning. Many of these were still alive as they were iced down to keep them fresh. Those that came by the market later reported that these fish did not stay on the tables long in that they were bought up quickly by the local merchants. Some chose to hike to the clock tower at the top of the island and were rewarded with views of town and the nearby Peloponnese peninsula.
A wet and windy ride brought us back to the Panorama for lunch. While we dined, the ship repositioned a short distance to a new anchorage by a local beach. Here we found great protection from the wind and were able to enjoy an afternoon swimming and playing on a sandy beach. Conditions were much better than expected so we were able to spend the latter part of our afternoon jumping from Panorama’s rail one last time.
After our final Panoramics challenge, the Spartans emerged victorious. We finished the day with the presentation of the medals and a fun slideshow of our week together.
