Sibenik (to Krka Nat’l Park), Croatia

Many of us were on deck at 0700 awaiting the pilot for the narrow entrance into Sibenik Bay. Panorama sat waiting, waiting, waiting in clear, still water, and the only activity seemed to be a lot of discussion and gesticulation in the bridge. We were told that the harbormaster was making us wait for another ship that was an hour late, so we delayed our entrance and found ourselves with more challenges at the alternative docksite. By 0915 we had improvised and adapted, and we were underway to our second of Croatia’s beautiful National Parks: the waterfalls of Krka.

We walked a few hundred meters to an overlook of the laddered cascades, and had an orientation of this magnificent natural site. Waterfalls, waterfalls, forest and waterfalls captured all of our senses. Some of us opted to begin with visits to the sugar mill and forgery, while others went straight for the lower falls. Almost everyone managed the full loop down to the lower cascades and up the trail across a boardwalk complex, and we all returned refreshed and energized after a non-guided nature morning.

Back in Sibenik, most of us went for a walk to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sveti Jakovi (St. James Cathedral), extraordinary for its masonry. Then it was back to the ship to depart back out through the Sibenik cut, and set sail for a lazy afternoon with a good sea breeze south.
